Geological Survey of India (GSI) which was set up on 4th March, 1851, celebrated the sesquicentennial year of its productive existence through a year long programme beginning with an International Seminar at its Central Headquarters in Calcutta on 4th March, 2001. The following International and National Seminars were organized by GSI during 2001-2002
A Postage stamp was issued by the Department of Post, Government of India on March 4, 2001, to commemorate this occasion. The four colour stamp shows bauxite (aluminium ore), chalcopyrite (copper ore) and psilomelane (manganese ore). The denomination of the stamp is 300 paise (Rs.3.00)
