Engineering Geology and Geo-Technical Investigations
Hydroelectric and Irrigation projects
Communication Projects
Gas and oil pipelines
Slope stability
Land subsidence
Sponsored Schemes
Water Resources Development projects like irrigations, hydel power etc.
Communication projects, particularly road/rail alignment in mountain regions and bridges
Engineering constructions and miscellaneous projects.
Geotechnical evaluation of major river basins.
GSI has been utilizing its expertise for making significant contributions for the techno-economical evaluation at different stages of construction of number of water resource development projects (dams, reservoirs, canal, irrigation projects, etc) communication projects (railway lines, highways, high-tension transmission lines, tunnels, etc) defense installation projects, urban development projects, industrial estate projects, environment hazard management and mitigation projects (landslide hazard zonation, etc) in different parts of the country. Miscellaneous activity like meteorite impact evaluation, tsunami impact evaluation.
GSI also undertakes geotechnical investigations at different stages at the request of the sponsoring agencies and offers appropriate recommendations for construction of cost-effective and safe civil engineering structures.
Significant Achievements:
GSI’s geotechnical studies and consequent geological advice have helped in successfully tackling adverse foundation conditions, notable examples being – Bhakra Nangal (the highest straight gravity concrete dam), Hirakud, Damodar Valley Corporation multipurpose projects, Idduki (highest Arch dam), Beas-Sutlej link (one of the longest inter-river diversions). GSI is currently engaged in geotechnical studies and counselling in major water resource development and communication projects all over the country.
Adverse tunnelling conditions were successfully tackled on Yamuna, jaldhaka and Loktak.
Landslide hazard Zonation map prepared for entire North Eastern Region.
Comprehensive effort to define and delineate natural hazard prone areas and to evolve hazard resistant designs for civil structures.
Highlights of achievement during the first four years of the Tenth Five Year Plan (April, 2002 to December, 2005)
753 investigations under 150 projects of Geotechnical and engineering geological studies have been undertaken for effective planning and execution of civil engineering projects for water resource management/ development/ creation of communication network, transport and other infrastructure facilities.
