Studies on environmental impact, mitigation of effects of urban development
Global change programme
GSI’s activities include regional geo-environmental appraisal for identification of areas subject to natural hazards and environmental degradation; geoenvironmental appraisal of mining belts, tourist resorts, urban complexes and river valley project sites; pollution specific studies and Geo-environmental Impact Assessment for specific anthropogenic activities; fluvial and coastal geodynamics studies and detailed village-wise appraisal of environmental resources and constraints for development of rural economy. In addition Syn-Exploration Baseline Data Generation (SEBDG) studies of the different geo-environmental parameters e.g. geology, geomorphology, soil, surface water, groundwater and landuse / landcover are carried out concomitantly with mineral exploration programmes.
Significant Achievements:
District-wise geo-environmental assessment studies in selected areas of 10 states.
Geoenvironmental impact assessment of coal, iron ore, base metals, phosphate and dolomite mining activities.
Geoenvironmental appraisal and suggestion of conservation measures for Ajanta and Ellora caves.
Geoenvironmental appraisal and generation of baseline data for environmentally viable urban expansion plans for Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad twin cities, Lucknow, Kanpur, Bangalore, Cochin, etc.
Geoenvironmental studies of river erosion of Ganga River in Malda and Murshidabad districts (West Bengal), beach morphology changes (Digha, West Bengal) and coastal erosion (Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Kerala).
Research on genesis and mitigation of public health hazards such as arsenicosis, fluorosis, etc.
