Marine Geo-techniques
The Marine Wing of GSI with its ocean-going research vessel Samudra Manthan and two coastal launches Samudra Kaustubh and Samudra Shaudhikama, has been carrying out sea-bed surveys within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Territorial Waters (TW) of India and also in the International Waters.
Activities of Marine Wing include Seabed Mapping within Territorial Waters, Parametric studies in the shelf area, Placer mineral resource evaluation, Geotechnical investigation of the seabed, Monitoring of coastal processes and shoreline changes, Shallow seismic survey, Evaluation of sand bodies, Sediment dynamics; High Resolution Study of Planktons; Close spaced bathymetric survey and geo environmental evaluation; Creation and Development of Marine Geosciences Database; Compilation of seabed maps.
Significant Achievements:
More than 95% of the 2,012 million sq km Exclusive Economic Zone, including about 1,05,000 sq km of territorial waters of India have been surveyed.
Heavy mineral placer deposits have been located in the offshore areas which are exploitable with available technology.
Zones of lime mud, phosphate rich sediments, calcareous sediments, indications of hydrocarbons and metaliferous micronodules have been located
Series of seabed maps, covering 2o X 2o area, based on offshore geological –geophysical- geochemical data generated by GSI and drilling-cum-seismological inputs from ONGC has been published
Highlights of achievement during the first four years of the Tenth Five Year Plan (April, 2002 to December, 2005)
ONGC sponsored cruises for geochemical scan of hydrocarbon were taken up by R. V. Samudra Manthan.
12,827 l.km. of Bathymetric and 9,726 l.km. of Magnetic Surveys were carried out by R. V. Samudra Manthan within EEZ of India.
13,345 sq km was covered under the seabed-mapping programme within Territorial Waters by the two coastal launches.
