Shallow Subsurface Geology and Drilling up to 300 metres
Drill Core Library and Documentation of cores
One of the major activities of Geological Survey of India is Mineral and Energy Resources Exploration. A multi-disciplinary approach is adopted in any investigation project connected with mineral and energy resources. This starts with large scale and detailed mapping aided by interpretative analysis of remotely sensed and aero geophysical data, followed by ground geophysical survey, geochemical prospecting and understand the subsurface geology through pitting, trenching and finally by
drilling.
GSI’s drilling operation dates back to 1868 in Wardha coal fields of Maharashtra. From the beginning of 20th century, GSI had utilized drilling as an aid to its mineral exploration efforts. Separate drilling stream started functioning in GSI from 1955. From a moderate fleet of five rigs in 1955, the fleet strength has increased manifold today and consists of high end deep drilling rigs also.
The new
charter of GSI enumerates vide its 3rd clause that the drill cores of representative boreholes of each investigation and selected zones in other boreholes drilled for mineral exploration, stratigraphic studies etc be preserved hence forth for future reference and benefit of research scientists. It is envisaged that a study of skeletonised drill cores may help in reassessing the old investigations in the light of advanced scientific knowledge and superior analytical facilities. It may also help in planning future investigations and R & D programmes. Moreover, the importance of a modern core library as a repository of geological information can not be underestimated.
Accordingly it has been decided to establish core libraries in all six regions. The libraries thus set up will also stores the cores of respective zones of Coal wing and AMSE wing. Entire core of one representative borehole in each investigation and skeletonised core of other boreholes will be preserved in permanent G I Boxes stacked in steel racks in permanent Core sheds. Appropriate metadatabase is being generated for quick retrieval of cores of any area for future reference.
The core libraries are being set up at Bhubaneswar, Nagpur, Lucknow, Shillong, Hyderabad and Jaipur.
