Geological Survey of India is the second oldest survey in the country. This institution has provided vital input into all facets of national economic development, both before and after independence. The Geological Survey of India was set up in I85l with the sole direction to locate coal for the railways. Over the years GSI has expanded its role to undertake elucidation of the geological set up of the country, including assessment and regional level exploration for coal and other mineral resources, geo-engineering projects, geotechnical studies, geo-environment and natural hazard mitigation studies, glaciology, seismotectonics etc, constitute GSI’s
present activity areas.
Every year GSI identifies the quantum of work to be done in consonance with its charter and formulates its Field Season programme. The results of these investigations and surveys carried out each year are documented in the form of in-house scientific and technical reports, which are known as
Unpublished Reports - so called because these reports are not widely circulated and not necessarily priced. These are available for consultation at
GSI libraries all over the country.
On the availability of GSI unpublished Progress Reports to State Government Departments
GSI provides unpublished unrestricted Progress Reports to State Government Departments subject to the following conditions:
1. The State Government should enter into an agreement of confidentiality with GSI
2. The concerned State Government will have to pay for the reports which are used for commercial purposes and may result in commercial ventures undertaken by PSUs or private entrepreneurs and
3. Clearance of Survey of India / Ministry of Defence has to be taken before handing over the reports to others in case the reports contain maps of large scale topographic data, which need such clearances.
