Curatorial Services
 
The Curatorial Division, located in Calcutta, is the repository of:
  • Type fossils and other registered fossil collection of GSI
  • Meteorites
  • Registered rocks and minerals
The Division also maintains the following Galleries:
  • Siwalik Gallery with about 6000 fossils at the Indian Museum, Kolkata.
  • Earth and meteorite Gallery with about 700 meteorites at the Indian Museum, Kolkata.
  • Rocks and mineral Gallery with over 67,000 rock and 21,000 mineral specimens at the Indian Museum, Kolkata
  • Invertebrate fossil Gallery with about 28,000 plant, invertebrate and microfossils at the Indian Museum, Kolkata.
  • Meteorite gallery at Central Headquarters, GSI, Kolkata
Services available:
  • The Division offers assistance to visiting scientists for study of registered fossils.
  • Organizes exhibitions, highlighting nation's progress in earth science studies, at national and international levels.
  • Provides assistance to research workers / students to study specific aspects of rocks, minerals and fossils
  • Donate specimens of rocks and minerals to different academic institutions both as educational aid and for the purpose of research.
  • Provides consultancy in setting up of museums or exhibitions.
  • Guide students of earth science in understanding the technique of identifying rocks and minerals in hand specimens.
