Engineering Geology and Geotechnical Investigations
Sir Thomas Oldham was the first geologist of the Survey who rendered
geological advice to the Civil engineers on the railway alignment between
Calcutta and Patna in 1859. Since then GSI played an active role in
geotechnical studies related to all major river valley projects,
communication projects and other infrastructure development projects in the
country. GSI has a team of geoscientists specially trained in the study of
geotechnical properties of rocks, seismotectonics, neotectonics and
earthquake-impact studies. GSI also has well equipped
Geotechnical Laboratories
in all the Regional and Wing offices.
The services available include
Generation of data on physical properties of rock, soil, coarse and fine aggregates, etc. on commercial basis.
Foundation studies for River valley projects, dams, barrages and power projects (pre-project, construction and post-project stages)
Studies for alignment of roads, railways, irrigation canals and tunnels (pre-project and construction stage)
Seismicity, micro-earthquake and landslide hazard studies
Studies on specialized problems like flood control and river bank erosion
