Geodata Centers at GSI were established with a view to cater to the needs of computer based data processing for field going officers. Gradually the gamut of activity broadened to holistic management of geoscientific data. Accordingly, GSI set up a Geoscientific Data Centre with distributed sub-centres at the Regional Headquarters and a National Centre at CHQ, Calcutta. The Centers are equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software capable of complete geoinformation management and knowledge development. Over the years, some significant projects have been undertaken by these centers, notable amongst them being Geoinformatics, Geochemical inventory, Jaladhatri etc. Currently these knowledge centers are spearheading a movement to popularize the usage of free and open source software in lieu of proprietary tools in future.
