Geophysical Laboratory

Geophysics Divisions in GSI is currently engaged in studies like crustal structure and neotectonic activity in suspected active fault areas, Urban Geology and Seismic microzonation studies, 3-D seismotectonics, Seismic hazard study and risk evaluation, 3-D attenuation structure beneath earthquake affected regions and its bearing on crustal heterogeneity, bore hole logging, mapping the basement configuration of concealed areas from Bouguer anomaly map using harmonic inversion and Resistivity and magnetic survey, MEQ survey, permanent GPS station monitoring and GPS survey to obtain temporal variation of displacement or movement of landmass.

GSI has an experience of five decades in application of gravity, magnetic, IP-Resistivity, electromagnetic, shallow seismic surveys and bore-hole logging in mineral exploration, identification of sub-surface structures, urban planning, aquifer mapping, sea-water incursion, geo-environmental studies, archaeology, earthquake precursor aspects and management of other natural hazards.

Has an array of geophysical field survey equipment and experienced professionals in all the six regional centers and the Central Geophysics Division,

Different field survey techniques and their application
