GSI played an active role in geotechnical studies related to all Irrigation Projects, Hydroelectric Projects, Communication Projects, Power Houses, Power Substations, Environmental Projects, and Urban Developmental Projects in India since pre-independence days. The laboratory testing for geotechnical properties of rocks and soils is of prime significance in qualitative evaluation/assessment in the design of civil engineering structures, slope stability solutions, etc. Not only civilian structures, landslide hazard analysis and seismotectonic studies also requires various geotechnical parameters for correct evaluation.

GSI has a stream of geoscientists specially trained in the study of rock properties and the impact of both short term and long term stress on it. The geotechnical laboratories in GSI have the capability to determine all engineering parameters in respect of soil and rock samples. Facilities for in situ tests such as Standard Penetration Test, Pressure Meter Test are also available with these labs. The Eastern Region laboratory has been enriched recently by the introduction of highly sophisticated Computerized Soil Triaxial equipment.

Service is provided to any and everybody on payment based on the schedule of charges of different tests as approved by the Ministry of Mines.

• Laboratories can generate data on physical properties of rock, soil, coarse and fine aggregates, etc.
• Capable to carry out tests for determining particle size, density, specific gravity, moisture content, consistency limits, shrinkage limit, free swell index, coefficient of consolidation & compressibility index and shear strength parameters(C & ?) of soils; density, specific gravity, porosity, void ratio, water absorption, strength parameters (uniaxial & tensile), shear strength parameters(C & ?) and elastic & deformational moduli of rocks; and abrasion, crushing value, impact value and slake durability index of rock aggregates.
• Foundation studies - River valley projects, dams, barrages and power projects (pre project stage, construction stage and post project services)
• Studies for alignment of road, railway, irrigation canals and tunnels (both pre project and construction stage services)
• Seismicity, micro earthquake and landslide hazard studies
• Studies on specialized problems like flood controls, and river bank erosion
