Glaciological

Glaciers have direct impact on the life of over 750 million people inhabiting the Indo-Gangetic-Brahmaputra plains as most of the rivers originating from Himalaya carry water discharged from the glaciers during the lean months. Glaciology is a science which deals with the study and management of glaciers. Since the inception in January 1974, Glaciology Division undertook over 120 glaciological expeditions in Himalaya involving

  • Water Resource Management in form of snow/ice encompassing
    • Neh Nar, Harmukh and Rulung glaciers in Jammu & Kashmir
    • Gara, Gor Garang, Shaune Garang, Triloknath and Hamtah glaciers in HP
    • Tipra bank and Dunagiri glaciers in Uttaranchal
  • Monitoring of the glacier fronts in
    • Chenab basin, Himachal Pradesh

  • Snow cover assessment in
    • Beas valley, Himachal Pradesh
    • Dhauliganga valley in Uttaranchal
    • Sind valley in Jammu & Kashmir
Services
  • glaciological survey applying modern tools viz. terrestrial photogrammetry, EDM survey, conductivity meters for discharge measurements and state of art meteorological instruments etc. in study of the glaciers of northwest Himalaya.
  • Conduct training courses for the officers, students and research scholars of other institutions involving all aspects of glaciological studies (through collaboration with DST).
  • Provide scientific and technical advice to other agencies/organizations (GSI already provides input to Panel on snow and ice, High Level Technical Committee on Hydrology (HILTECH) under the ministry of Irrigation; National Committee on Glaciology under DST; Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) under the Ministry of Defence).
