GSI has an excellent track record of augmenting the mineral resources of the country all throughout its existence. It has a core group of exploration geo-scientists adept in the assessment of different mineral deposits in varied geological milieu. GSI also has elaborate supporting facilities of sub surface drilling, geophysical and geochemical stream to back up the exhaustive mineral exploration work. Modern facilities also exist for digital data collection, storage, processing, analysis and interpretation.
Services available
Exploration of different minerals in any terrain from preliminary reconnaissance to detailed exploration (plane table geological mapping to sub-surface exploration by drilling).
Integrated deposit modelling assisted by geophysical and geochemical surveys.
Mineral Prognostication using multi-criteria integration approach
Apart from the above consolidated packages, the following services are also offered independently.
Geophysical services including multi-sensor survey and logging.
Geochemical services.
Drilling services.
Coal, Lignite and CBM Exploration
On the recommendation of Coal Committee for systematic survey of coal fields, search for coal was initiated in the country in 1845. Exploration for coal aided by drilling started since 1869. Geophysical techniques were introduced in coal exploration during the late nineteen forties. Coal wing of GSI, situated in Kolkata has a team of highly skilled professionals. GSI with its excellent records in adding coal resources to India can serve the developing countries with geological know-how for coal exploration. Emphasis to lignite exploration is given in areas deficient in coal.
Exploration for Coal Bed Methane (CBM) has become a national agenda in the recent energy scenario. It has attracted the attention of planners, policymakers and investors. Directorate General of Hydrocarbon (DGHC), the nodal agency for CBM is closely interacting with GSI, the latter providing the primary database for identification of prospective blocks in different coalfields for CBM Round III allotment by Govt. to the prospective bidders. In some areas, investigated by GSI, the study of CBM is being outsourced to CMRI while in others it is carried out in collaboration with DGHC and CMRI. With the objective to assess the potentiality of CBM, sampling has been carried out (outsourced to CMRI) from coal zones for analyses of the required parameters.
Action has been initiated to set up Coal Wing’s own laboratory facility for CBM studies.

Coal Resources of India
The present updated total
coal resources of the country as per the latest national inventory as on 1.1.2004 is 2,45,692.42 million tonne for coal seams of 0.9m and above in thickness and upto 1200m depth from surface. The inventory is based on sub-surface data accrued from regional (including promotional) and detailed drilling carried out by GSI, CMPDI, SCCL and MECL. Out of the total resources, Gondwana coalfields contribute 2,44,785.47 million tonne while the Tertiary coalfields account 906.95 million tonne.
