Mineral Physics Laboratory was set up in Geological Survey of India as back as in 1954 with X-ray Diffractometer and Emission Spectrograph for qualitative as well as Semi¬-quantitative analysis of geological materials. Mineral Physics Laboratory was given status of a full fledged Division in 1973. Regional Mineral Physics Laboratories were opened in 1976. At present, there are six Regional Laboratories in G.S.I., besides the existing Mineral Physics Division at C.H.Q. These Laboratories in GSI are well equipped with modern instruments to carry out physical analysis of geological materials and are manned by highly qualified and trained professionals.
The Mineral Physics Division, CHQ is equipped with the following instruments
APD-15 Automated Powder Diffractometer system with PW-1710 Software.
PW-1140 XRD - Unit (Manual)
X'Pert PRO XRD - System (Fully Automated)
Diamond TG/DT A system with DSC facilities
IR-843 Spectrophotometer instrument.
The XRD Units are used for Mineral Phase identification by X-ray Powder Diffraction Technique and determination of unit cell values through Semi-quantitative analysis and related work on geological and inorganic substances.
Mineral Phases identification is also done for "amorphous minerals" by IR - Spectrophotometric technique where X-ray diffraction technique fails.
Thermal analysis of samples: Weight change as well as changes in structure of substances with respect to uniform heating of the samples in a controlled environment.
Services available
Semi quantitative mineralogical analysis of geological and other crystalline substances.
Study of polymorphs
Determination of cell parameters.
Thermal analysis (DTG, DTA, DSC) of geological samples.
EPMA In situ non-destructive chemical analysis of micro grain compositional micrograph together with elemental distribution pattern with the help of X-ray scanning on micron size area. Quantitative data collection on micron size grain enable to determine the elemental composition and accurate stoichiometric formula for mineral phase/phases present on the surface area of the sample exposed to the incident beam
Semi-quantitative mineral phase analysis of geological samples
Schedule of charges
Rs. 1887/- (including 10.2% Tax) per sample is charged for XRD- analysis.
