Offshore Survey and Exploration

Marine Wing of GSI has more than 100 experienced marine geoscientists, well equipped ocean-going research vessel and coastal launches which are capable of conducting seabed survey. It has surveyed over 95% of the 2,012 million sq km EEZ, including about 1,05,000 sq km of territorial waters of India on reconnoitory scale and has located heavy mineral placer deposits which are exploitable with available technology. Other marine resources identified are lime mud, phosphate rich sediments, calcareous sediments, hydrocarbons, metalliferous micronodules, etc. Marine Wing has gathered vast experience regarding applied studies/survey related to coastal geotectonics and hazards, placer location, port development and is capable to meet the specific demand oriented needs of the sponsor. It continues to pursue research and development in various fields of oceanography.

The Marine Data Centre at Kolkata is a well equipped laboratory of DOD which acts as the central data bank on ocean related geological parameters, collected in course of 400 missions, with need based retrieval system for on line/off line data exchange.
