Geological Survey of India is having three Scanning Electron Microscopes with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometers in Kolkata, Hyderabad and Lucknow Office.
The SEM-EDX is capable of capturing ultra structural details of samples as images in film and in digital mode. The instruments can magnify specimens up to 3, 00,000 times. The surface features are best seen in Secondary Electron image while compositional and topographical images can be seen with Back Scatter Electron image.
With the help of EDX, both qualitative and quantitative microanalysis can be done by nondestructive method. Elements from Boron to Uranium with a detection limit of 100 ppm can be analyzed. GSI has qualified and trained officers to carry out the study along with other scientists from the user agencies. Besides providing routine services to various Operations and Regions of GSI for mineral investigation, environmental, mineralogical, palaeontological and palaeoclimatic studies, services have been provided to outside organizations of international repute like Indian Toxicological Research Centre (CSIR), Central Institute of Plastic Engineering & Technology, Indian Veterinary Research Institute, King George Medical University, King George Dental University, etc for study of kidney stones, tooth samples, metal fused porcelain, rubber polymer, chemically treated sand and bone samples.
Samples from outside agencies are studied on payment basis. The facility is extended to outside departments at a charge of Rs 1089=00 (plus applicable service tax) per hour. Work is done by prior appointment only.
